Overview
This ongoing illustration series reimagines classic travel advertising through a modern Art Deco and mid-century design approach. Inspired by the iconic railway, cruise and airline posters of the early twentieth century, each piece combines minimalist vector illustration with bold typography and carefully selected colour palettes to capture the spirit of destinations and travel experiences.
The collection explores how simple geometric forms, composition and visual storytelling can evoke a strong sense of place while remaining clean, contemporary and instantly recognisable.
My Approach
Each poster begins with research into the history, architecture, culture or landmarks of the chosen destination before translating these elements into a simplified vector illustration. Rather than aiming for photographic realism, the focus is on creating strong silhouettes, balanced compositions and distinctive colour schemes that reflect the character of each location.
Throughout the collection I experimented with typography, texture and layout to recreate the timeless feel of vintage travel advertising while maintaining a modern, minimalist aesthetic.
Featured Designs
Iceberg Alley – Newfoundland
Inspired by Newfoundland’s famous Iceberg Alley, this poster uses a cross-sectional composition to reveal both the visible iceberg and the vast hidden mass beneath the ocean’s surface. Minimalist marine life silhouettes and subtle distressed textures reinforce the vintage travel poster style while celebrating one of Canada’s most unique natural attractions.
Japan – Mount Fuji
A bold minimalist interpretation of Japan featuring the iconic Torii gate, Mount Fuji and the rising sun. Using a striking red, black and white palette, the composition balances traditional symbolism with clean geometric forms inspired by classic Japanese graphic design.
China – Beijing
This design celebrates Beijing through the silhouette of a traditional Paifang set against a glowing sun and flock of birds. Warm gradient tones and bilingual typography combine to create a poster inspired by vintage tourism advertisements while reflecting the city’s rich cultural heritage.
Transatlantic Line
Influenced by the glamour of early twentieth-century ocean travel, this Art Deco-inspired poster captures the scale and elegance of a classic transatlantic liner through dramatic perspective, clean geometry and a restrained colour palette reminiscent of luxury cruise advertising. Pan Am – Jet Clippers to Europe
Drawing inspiration from the golden age of commercial aviation, this mid-century airline poster uses simplified shapes, bold typography and symbolic illustration to celebrate international travel. A stylised globe and pilot’s sleeve create a strong visual narrative that echoes the optimism of vintage Pan Am advertising.

Outcome
The Vintage Travel Poster Collection demonstrates my ability to develop a cohesive series of illustrations around a common visual theme while adapting each design to communicate the unique identity of its subject. The project allowed me to refine my illustration style, explore historical design influences and further develop my skills in branding, composition and visual communication.
