Overview
Motherwellnet is an unofficial historical archive documenting the complete history of Motherwell Football Club.
Originally launched in 2000 as a personal passion project, the website evolved into one of the most comprehensive online resources dedicated to the club, documenting every competitive fixture, player biography and significant moment throughout the club’s history.
The project combines historical research, digital publishing and multimedia content to create an accessible archive for supporters, researchers and football historians.
The Challenge
Football history is constantly evolving, with new matches played, players arriving and records being created every season. The challenge was creating a digital archive capable of managing a huge volume of historical information while remaining accessible and engaging for visitors.
My Role
I was responsible for all aspects of the project including:
• Website design and development
• WordPress management
• Historical research and fact checking
• Player and statistics research
• Copywriting and editorial content
• Graphic design
• Photography and image editing
• Archive organisation
• Image sourcing and permissions
• Social media promotion
Development
The website was built using WordPress, supported by custom design elements and multimedia content created using Adobe Creative Cloud tools.
A major part of the project involved researching thousands of historical records, sourcing archive material and working with collectors and supporters to preserve rare photographs and memorabilia.
Impact
Motherwellnet became a recognised resource among supporters and has been referenced in published football history books.
The success of the project also led to my involvement with the Motherwell FC Heritage Trust, where I became one of the original volunteers and trustees, helping support the organisation through its journey towards charitable status.
As the Heritage Trust develops its own digital archive, the long-term aim is to transition and preserve much of the research and content within the official heritage platform.
